The August 2009 Daring Bakers’ challenge was hosted by Angela of A Spoonful of Sugar and Lorraine of Not Quite Nigella. They chose the spectacular Dobos Torte based on a recipe from Rick Rodgers’ cookbook Kaffeehaus: Exquisite Desserts from the Classic Caffés of Vienna, Budapest, and Prague.

  1. Lovely job! A tiramisu sounds delicious. Glad it all worked out for you. =)

  2. Brilliant job Mandy! I love the caramel decorations that you’ve done. I recall seeing them on the reveal page and thinking WOW! 😀

Yes, I agree, the buttercream is not the easiest thing to work with. It was too soft and runny. That tiramisu idea is brilliant! Why didn’t I think of that before, being a diehard tiramisu fan myself.
Great job on the cake, the caramel swirls and bubble sugar looks stunning!

Your mini tortes are just gorgeous and the toffee looks spectacular! I love the tiramisu idea! I think I’ll have to give that one a go too!

I absolutely adore your toffe swirls, it adds an element of class to an already fabulous cake. From what i can see, you had 9 layers? what a feat! =D

      Thank you!
Yes, 9 layers! I almost did 10 but the mini tower already looked a little unsteady, lol. After all of that, it’s safe to say you could make 8 with 8 layers each 🙂

Great job, you were so smart to leave the lemon juice out of the caramel. Love the spiral caramel decoration.
