The August 2009 Daring Bakers’ challenge was hosted by Angela of A Spoonful of Sugar and Lorraine of Not Quite Nigella. They chose the spectacular Dobos Torte based on a recipe from Rick Rodgers’ cookbook Kaffeehaus: Exquisite Desserts from the Classic Caffés of Vienna, Budapest, and Prague.

Lovely job! A tiramisu sounds delicious. Glad it all worked out for you. =)
Brilliant job Mandy! I love the caramel decorations that you’ve done. I recall seeing them on the reveal page and thinking WOW! 😀
Thanks so much! I really had fun with this challenge and learnt quite a few new things 🙂
Yes, I agree, the buttercream is not the easiest thing to work with. It was too soft and runny. That tiramisu idea is brilliant! Why didn’t I think of that before, being a diehard tiramisu fan myself.
Great job on the cake, the caramel swirls and bubble sugar looks stunning!
Your mini tortes are just gorgeous and the toffee looks spectacular! I love the tiramisu idea! I think I’ll have to give that one a go too!
I absolutely adore your toffe swirls, it adds an element of class to an already fabulous cake. From what i can see, you had 9 layers? what a feat! =D
Thank you!
Yes, 9 layers! I almost did 10 but the mini tower already looked a little unsteady, lol. After all of that, it’s safe to say you could make 8 with 8 layers each 🙂
I just LOVE your caramel decorations! They came out so nice!
Those individual cakes look so pretty and perfect! Great job!
Cheers,
Rosa
Those are such beautiful little tortes Mandy. Love the sounds of frangelico. And sorry to hear about your blender 😦
Beautiful little cakes, and the caramel shapes are so adorable 🙂
Your mini tortes are so pretty crowned with caramel decorations.
Love what you did with the caramel 🙂 Your mini torts look very delicious and so cute 🙂
Great job, you were so smart to leave the lemon juice out of the caramel. Love the spiral caramel decoration.
Love your mini tortes. Especially the caramel design. I wanted to play around with it too,but with two little ones couldn’t find the time. Your buttercrem looks delicious too!
Love, love, LOVE the caramel decorations!! Each one is beautiful! Mini dobos are so cute! 🙂
Thank you! 😀
Welcome! You are fantastic! What an incredible feat, you did an amazing job! I’m jealous! Next month I won’t wait until the last minute… it’s much more enjoyable that way!
Very cute mini cakes! Love your caramel decorations! So pretty!
Gorgeous job!! Your photos are stunning, and I love your decorations =D.
Oh, I love these! I need to practice more with my caramel to get patterns that lovely!
Gorgeous towers! I love your mini dobos. 🙂
Beautiful tortes! They look so delicious and elegant!!
Your mini cakes are adorable! I love your caramel decorations – I failed mine!
Nicely done!
Wow I just love those mini tortas and your buttercream worked out so well. I like how you put the sticks in the stack to keep them straight. And that caramel is to die for. Cheers from Audax in Australia
Mandy, I don’t even like coffee, but I would scarf those little Dobos’ down in no time! When I saw them in the DK forum, I was awed! Gorgeous execution and, as always, amazing photos! They look so creamy and delish!!
Beautiful looking mini tortes! Congratulations
Very cute tortes, and great job on the caramel! I agree that the lemon was unnecessary. I love the addition of coffee and frangelico in the buttercream!
So beautiful! I love your sugar circles!
Those little cakes are perfect! loved the caramel spirals..
Thanks for your lovely comment 🙂
I love the caramel decorations! And I love the flavor combinations. I also used praline paste in my buttercream. Now, I’m wishing I went with coffee, too. Mmmm, coffee . .. .
Thanks to everyone for your lovely comments! 😀
I absolutely love the flavor combos you went with and I whole heartedly agree a tiramisu version would be heavenly!
Beautiful lil cakes and I loved the idea of your surprise for your neighbors.. how sweet is that? 🙂
Well done!

Love your mini version, lovely decoration!
so so pretty, great job!
Beautiful caramel decorations! Your cakes are so cute and I love the pale brown color of the buttercream against the caramel in the pictures. Fantastic job!
Mandy…when I read your comment on my tiopic, I was totally amazed and I laughed like I did not laugh before, you know at the same moment I was talking to one of my friends on the Yahoo messenger, she is a daring baker too, and she told me that the Dobos torta she liked the best is for one daring baker called Mandy, I asked her to send me a link for the page you posted in your pics, at the same moment I received your comment….LOL
The world is toooo small now.
